C Sqn Arrives in Bosnia

Major S. Gifford

April 2003

B and C Squadron Strathcona’s are currently conducting a handover as the Canadian Contribution to the Stabilization Force (SFOR) transitions from the 1st to 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI).

We are happy to report that all of the Squadron arrived safely in BOSNIA, where spring has sprung and the weather has been beautiful here in Camp MAPLE LEAF, ZGON.

Morale is good, and the soldiers are anxious to get on with our mission, which is to maintain the

safe and secure environment that has been established here.  We are lucky to have a large group of highly experienced soldiers in the Squadron with previous experience in Bosnia and these soldiers have certainly shared their expertise with the newer members of our team.

Over the next few weeks, the Sqn will be conducting mounted patrols and foot patrols in order to familiarize us with the area, the people and the current problems.  It is remarkable how much the country has changed since SFOR’s inception in 1996.  People have moved back to reclaim houses destroyed during the war, schools have been re-built and re-opened and lots of small businesses are up and running.  As you drive down the road, people wave to us, and the kids are always looking for a Canadian Soldier to stop and talk so they can practice their English, and maybe get a candy!  It is good to see that the hard work and previous efforts in Bosnia are producing such positive results.

The facilities here in Camp MAPLE LEAF, ZGON are good and while we do not have all the comforts of home, we are well looked after.  Most of the soldiers have already started to pump iron in the well equipped weight room and there is time for physical training.  No doubt C Squadron will return all pumped up!

We would also like to acknowledge the promotion of Cpl Graf to MCpl.  B Squadron has provided us with an excellent hand over of duties and they have done excellent work in theatre, carrying on with the Strathcona tradition.  The Squadron has a busy schedule of familiarization with their area of responsibility over the next few weeks.  We wish all Strathconas, families, loved ones and friends back in Canada best wishes.
