C Squadron In Germany
February 2002
Recently twenty members of C Squadron LdSH(RC) were fortunate enough to participate in a Small Unit Exchange (SUE). The
hosting unit was 2nd Company 104th Panzerbataillon. This exchange took place between 3 February 2002 and 20 February 2002 in Pfreimd, Germany.
During the SUE, members of the Squadron were introduced to the routine and work ethic of the German army, specifically of their armoured corps. During the time spent with the Germans, members of C Squadron were trained in the use of small arms employed by the Bundeswehr to include the H&K G36E and G3A3 assault rifles, H&K USP pistol and MG3 7.62mm machine gun. In addition, our soldiers were introduced to the German physical training program and participated in several sports activities some of which included the 100m sprint, 3000m run, long jump, shot put and 20km ruck-sack march. The most significant training aspect of the exchange was the Leopard 2A5 main battle tank gunnery training, culminating in a live fire exercise. The German hosts introduced the Squadron to a variety of equipment used by different combat arms. Members of C Squadron were able to visit Infantry and Artillery battalions and familiarize themselves with their vehicles and equipment. In addition, the opportunity was provided to participate in several local cultural events and weekend excursions to include both Berlin and Munich.
For the majority of soldiers, this exchange was the first opportunity to work with another army in a foreign country. The SUE saw the Canadian combat arms motto of ‘Improvise, Adapt and Overcome’ extensively employed during the many competitions. A wealth of information was absorbed as soldiers quickly adapted to their new environment. Friendships were made with the German soldiers and their families that will not soon be forgotten. A unique training opportunity that all immensely enjoyed.
