He enrolled in the Canadian Forces in December 1976 as an Infantryman, and qualified as a TQ 1 Infantryman at the 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group Operational Training Detachment in Wainwright, Alberta, in April 1977. He was then posted to the 3rd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (3 PPCLI) based at Work Point Barracks in Victoria, British Columbia. During his service with 3 PPCLI, MWO Silva qualified as Machine Gunner and Mortarman, and he was employed in Mortar Platoon for his last two years in the Regular Force.

In January 1980, MWO Silva transferred from the Regular Force to the Primary Reserve, in which he has served to the present date. He was a member of the Canadian Scottish Regiment (Princess Mary’s) headquartered in Victoria, British Columbia from 1980 until February 1990. During this period, MWO Silva qualified and was promoted to Master Corporal in 1981, to Sergeant in 1983 and Warrant Officer in 1985. When not attending the University of Victoria between 1984 and 1987, MWO Silva was frequently on full-time service with the Primary Reserve or his former unit, 3 PPCLI. In 1988, he deployed on United Nation operations to Cyprus as a Warrant Officer with 3 PPCLI during Op SNOWGOOSE Roto 49.

In February 1990, MWO Silva moved from Victoria to Vancouver, British Columbia, and transferred to the Royal Westminster Regiment based in New Westminster, British Columbia. Since then, he has been on full-time service in a variety of positions for 39 Canadian Brigade Group (formerly Pacific Militia Area and British Columbia District). In October 1995, MWO Silva transferred to 39 Canadian Brigade Group Headquarters (39 CBG HQ) and re-badged to the Rocky Mountain Rangers based in Kamloops, British Columbia. MWO Silva was promoted to his present rank in January 2009, and he is currently the G1 Services 2 for 39 CBG HQ.

In August 2009, MWO Silva requested and was tasked to be the Company Sergeant-Major of Foxtrot Company of Task Force Vancouver of Op PODIUM, a rifle company force-generated from 39 Canadian Brigade Group.
