Major Kevin Mead joined the Canadian Forces under the Regular Officer Training Program in 1994 and upon commissioning in 1998, was posted to the Royal Canadian Dragoons where he served as a reconnaissance troop leader within A Squadron. He deployed to Bosnia in 2001 as part of the 3rd Battalion Royal Canadian Regiment Battle Group, inclusive of which was a deployment to the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia as part of Op FORAGE attached to 16 Air Assault Brigade (UK).
Major Mead joined Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) in 2005. He served in the Regiment as the Administration Officer and Second-in-Command for Headquarters Squadron before assuming the positions of Second-in-Command of Echo Company in August 2005 and Officer Commanding Echo Company in December 2005 where he assisted in the implementation and fielding of the LAV TUA. Following service as the Regimental Operations Officer during the initial deployment of tanks to Afghanistan, Major Mead deployed as part of Headquarters Joint Task Force Afghanistan in November 2006 as the Assistant Chief of Staff for National Operations/J3, returning in August 2007.
Major Mead’s extra regimental employments have included tours to the Combat Training Centre Headquarters in Gagetown as the Aide to the Commander in 2002 prior to assuming duties at the Royal Canadian Armour School as a Tactics Instructor, Course Officer and Second-in-Command of Training Squadron. Major Mead also served at the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Center in Wainwright where he was employed as lead planner for Exercise MAPLE GUARDIAN 0801 (August 07 – June 2008). Most recently, he was posted to Headquarters 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group in October 2007 as the G3 during force generation and training of TF 3-09 and Operation PODIUM.
Major Mead has a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Calgary and is a graduate of the Army Operations Course.
Major Mead assumed command of Reconnaissance Squadron, Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) on 4 August 2009.
