"B" squadron, the Royal Canadian Dragoons, which had returned to Winnipeg in January 1901, was detached from that Regiment in July and re-designated "A" ( Permanent ) squadron, Canadian Mounted Rifles. At the same time, eight Non-Permanent squadrons, lettered "B" to "I" were raised across the prairies. The establishments of the time indicate that these squadrons were to form a Regiment with a Permanent Force officer from "A" squadron in command. However, this was never done and the squadrons remained independent. Under the command of Lieutenant Colonel T.D.B. Evans, the squadron carried out the routine duties of a peacetime permanent unit. A detachment was sent to the coronation of Edward VII in 1902, and in 1903 the prefix "Royal" was added to the title and "A" squadron dropped. In 1907, Maj. A.C. MacDonnell assumed command.
In 1909 it was decided that the famous name "Strathcona's Horse", should be perpetuated in the Canadian Permanent Active Militia, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Rifles were accordingly redesignated Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians). The establishment was soon increased to two squadrons and Colonel S.B. Steele, then commanding Military District No. 10, again took command of the Regiment in addition to his other duties.
The final change in the name of the Regiment came on 1 May 1911 when the prefix "Lord" was added and that same year Lord Strathcona was appointed Honourary Colonel, a position he held until his death in 1914. In 1912, the Regiment received its first Battle Honour "South Africa 1900 - 1901" and A.C. MacDonnell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel to assume command.
