In early 1946, the regiment returned to Canada, settling for a short time in Camp Borden before finding a permanent home in Calgary. Peacetime routine was again broken by the outbreak of war in 1951, this time in Korea.
From May 1951 to May 1954 "C", "B" and "A" squadrons successively spent a year each providing armoured support for the Battalions of 25 Canadian Infantry Brigade of 1st Commonwealth Division.
The Strathcona's have also participated in Canada's NATO brigade in Europe since its formation in 1953. An armoured squadron was stationed in Germany from 1953 to 1955, and a reconnaissance squadron from 1957 to 1959. From 1966 to 1970 the entire regiment served as part of the 4th Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group in Germany.
On 26 July 1968, while the Regiment was stationed in Germany, a new Guidon was presented by Field Marshal Sir Richard Hull, a former 17th/21st Lancer officer. The old Guidon was laid up in St. Stephen's church, Calgary, following a parade in which the regiment exercised the Freedom of the City. The latter reaffirmed the close ties with Calgary which have existed since 1920.
The Regiment was re-established in Calgary in June 1970, when the Fort Garry Horse was removed from the order of battle and its members became Strathcona's. They were joined by a number of "originals" posted in from Germany and elsewhere. The unit was quartered in Sarcee Barracks, now Harvey Barracks, a camp built for the regiment in 1958.
Peacekeeping duties overseas have occupied a large portion of the regiment's time in the modern era. Beginning in late 1956, soldiers from the Strathcona's have served as peacekeepers in Egypt, Cyprus, Cambodia and Bosnia-Herzegovina in the former Yugoslav republic.
