Corporal Hornburg Funeral
|
The purpose of this note is to update you on the arrangements for the return of Corporal Hornburg to Calgary and his funeral. Understandably, many people are thinking about this fallen soldier and his family, and are looking for details of the funeral.
Corporal Hornburg's remains are scheduled to arrive in Calgary today, 1 October. While we do not yet have final details for the funeral, it is tentatively set for 1300 hours, Thursday, 4 October in Calgary. This could change. Unfortunately, we do not have any more fidelity at this time. The Assisting Officer continues to work with the family to confirm their wishes.
We will distribute updated information as soon as we have it. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact me should you require anything further.
Perseverance,
Trevor Cadieu Major 2IC LdSH(RC) |

Officer Commanding and Squadron Sergeant-Major’s Monthly Update
|
1 October 2007
Dear families, friends, and fellow soldiers,
This is the first of what we hope to be monthly installments to provide to you some of our insight and comments on the life of the Squadron. It is hard to believe that a month has passed since we left Canada. The tempo of operations has been significant, but manageable. Our pre-deployment training has paid immense dividends. We realize from your perspective that we were away training for a very long time. We will both tell you that we would not have changed a thing in our training plan as all that we prepared for has come to be in our first month. Read More ... |

C Squadron Casualty
|
While engaged in heavy combat with the Taliban yesterday, Corporal Nathan Hornburg of C Squadron was sadly killed. Corporal Hornburg, a soldier with The King's Own Calgary Regiment, deployed to Afghanistan as a member of a C Squadron Armoured Recovery Vehicle crew. He was killed while assisting in the recovery of a Leopard tank that had thrown its track. The tank squadron was in close combat with the enemy for several hours at the time of this loss. Four other soldiers were slightly injured in the same attack. The families of the deceased and wounded soldiers have been notified.
All Strathconas mourn today the loss of a fallen comrade. This incident has of course saddened the great soldiers of C Squadron, but it has also reinforced their resolve in their mission to bring security to Afghanistan in order to enable reconstruction efforts.
Our thoughts and full support are with the family of Corporal Hornburg. Details of his repatriation, funeral arrangements and the wishes of the family will be distributed once known.

2IC Strathcona's - Update
|
By Major Trevor Cadieu 22 August 2007
I am writing to update you on the activities of your Regiment and the progress of our soldiers serving abroad.
A Sqn. Two soldiers from A Sqn sustained minor injuries on 17 August when the TLAV they were traveling in was struck by a large IED as they deployed on a resupply mission. They were air evacuated to the Kandahar Airfield. Both soldiers have been released from hospital and are expected to make a full recovery. It will come as no surprise that everyone responded with great professionalism to this incident, and our troops completed their mission once the casualties were evacuated. While A Sqn continues to endure temperatures in excess of 50 degrees Celsius, our tank crews are now equipped with cooling suits that have reduced the number of heat casualties sustained by the Sqn. The soldiers of this team will continue to epitomize our motto, 'Perseverance', as they will remain engaged in combat operations until the end of the deployment. An A Sqn Leopard responded earlier in the week to an enemy rocket attack, reinforcing with the Taliban once again the capabilities of our tanks, and the sub unit returned very recently from an operation with 3rd Battalion R22eR Battle Group. A Sqn will return to Edmonton mid-September for some extremely well deserved leave. Read More ... |
