Who Drank all the Tabasco? – 3 Troop on OP
|
Trooper Kevin A. England 11 October 2004
During the past few weeks, 3 Troop’s Alpha Patrol has gone through some changes. With the departure of WO Jim McGregor, Cpl Tomaz Wasylow, Cpl Trevor Bricker, and Tpr Ryan Pasuta on Home Leave (HLTA), the crew of 43 stepped in to fill the gap and keep us operational. During a recent operation to Surobi, we were out for three days checking polling stations for the upcoming Afghan Presidential Elections. This region is quite scenic and actually boasts a lake of sorts. Actually, it is a man made lake, created by the Surobi Dam, which supplies nearly all of the hydroelectric power to the capital, Kabul. With the abundance of water, there is actually some greenery and pine trees, a welcome switch from the perpetually brown mountains and dusty plains of the Kabul area.
It was during this operation that Cpl Curtis “Pappy” Simpson developed an insatiable taste for hot sauce. The rations we eat are good, however, after eating them for several days, it’s nice to “spice things up” a little. The problem is that Pappy spiced his up a little more than everyone else and used up the whole bottle of Tabasco in only 3 meal sittings! Not to be outdone, Cpl “Crazy Johnny” Unrau, and Cpl “Oz” Oswald scoured the kitchen while back in Camp Julien and came across a 2-litre bottle of “Franks Red Hot” sauce. With that secretly stowed in the back of 43B, we should be able to keep Pappy appeased for the time being.
With the next block of HLTA starting and MCpl Tom Pett, Cpl Bryce Warnica, Cpl Alex DiBlasio, and Tpr Mark “Bubbles” Dennis finally getting to understand what the term “time-off” means, our thoughts will be with the Pett family as they anxiously await the arrival of their first child. I just hope that they leave some goodies for us in Mirage for us to purchase on the way home. In the meantime, we will continue to miss home, especially our families. Nevertheless, with the elections only days away, we must continue to persevere and help Afghanistan get a new start with its fledgling democracy.
