60th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands
|
Lt. A.S.H. Wong June 2005
From 23 April – 12 May 2005, the Regiment sent three personnel to the Netherlands to participate in celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands. Lt Alfred Wong as a division guard commander and MCpl Ted Amos and MCpl Ed Johnson were section commanders on the guard. The guard took part in several parades and ceremonies while we were in Holland, including wreath-laying ceremonies at the Groesbeek, Holten, and Reichswald Canadian War Cemeteries. We also conducted liberation parades at several cities, such as Wageningen, Nijverdal and Apeldoorn, where the crowds were out in the streets to cheers us on, rain or shine.
The highlight of the trip was meeting veterans and Strathconas everywhere we went. In Groesbeek, we met Father Bob Greene who was delighted to tell us “how B Squadron won the War!” CWO (ret) Bud Mclean was apart of the official delegation from Veterans Affair Canada and we saw him everywhere we went. Talking to the veterans was a humbling experience that made our trip memorable. Also, we met Col (ret) J.M. Snell and Maj Tom Bradley in Harskamp with the Chairman of the Military Committee Gen Henault.
Another highlight of the trip was the Strathcona monument in Otterlo. The Regiment fought through the town of Otterlo, which was only 4 km from where we were staying. The historians that were attached to the contingent did not believe that there was a plaque there. Nevertheless, with some perseverance, we found the monument that was dedicated to the five Strathconas who lost their lives fighting through Otterlo.
The trip was humbling experience and after talking to the veterans, it was clear that they enjoyed it too. Although, we did not to get to see all of Holland, I think we made our mark. Mostly importantly, no matter where you go, you can expect to find a Strathcona!
