Regimental Soccer in Winterpeg
|
By 2Lt Christopher Stobbs March 2006
Members of the Regimental Soccer Team were in Winnipeg 10 – 13 February 2006, representing Canadian Forces Base Edmonton in the Prairie Regional Indoor Soccer Tournament. The team arrived in Winnipeg the evening of 10 Feb after an eighteen-hour bus ride. The team was then invited to a meet and greet that evening for all teams and support staff involved with the tournament. The meet and greet gave us the opportunity to see what type of competition we would face over the weekend. The competition included Moose Jaw, Shilo, Winnipeg and Suffield. The tournament was two days long and started with a round robin where all five teams played each other once. The following day the top four teams played each other in semi-finals and a final game. After the first day of play, we had lost all four games that we played, including two nail bitters versus Winnipeg and Moose Jaw. Moose Jaw ended up winning in the final against Suffield.
Although we did not win any games, there was a lot of effort shown by the Strathcona Soccer Team over the weekend. Most notable were the stellar performances from Cpl Jenkins and Cpl Harding. Cpl Jenkins was named to the all-star team as the number one goalie of the tournament. He was magnificent in the final game that LdSH(RC) had versus Moose Jaw. Cpl Jenkins single-handedly kept us in the game during a hard fought battle versus the eventual tournament champions. Cpl Harding, despite feeling under the weather the whole tournament, was still able to score the majority of the goals for our team. Cpl Harding was running circles around the competition while battling a fever. His performance was inspirational to the rest of the team.
The tournament consisted of many goal attempts ricocheting off the post at alarming speeds, including one player who decided to try it without the ball! The teams were so evenly matched that, until the final day, it was impossible to tell who would end up winning the tournament. Although unsuccessful in bringing home the trophy, our team did learn a lot about their soccer skills, the definition of teamwork, having a good time, and most importantly…how to schedule around “Last Call”! |
