HAPPY CANADA DAY
By Cpl Dave Druken
3 July 2009

First Troop’s day started with a hazy morning and a laugh. We keep saying that Tpr Verwey is the most gullible guy in the world, but we never thought we would be able to convince him he missed Mother’s Day. So, after three days of asking if he had called his mother on Sunday to wish her a happy mother’s day, he was convinced he had indeed missed Mother’s Day and called home to wish his mom a happy Mother’s Day. When he realized his mistake he shook his head at the guys and said ”well done.”

After the chuckle, the slow start to the day finally got moving at nine with the Tp prepared for a long day of landscaping, clearing the shrubs beside the rtes for security reasons. At one point, 31B started to leak fluids and was sent back to do some maintenance, which ended up being very quickly finished. The rest of the afternoon proved to be a long hot afternoon broken up with some of the Squadron decorating their gators and bunkers. With dozen of care packages arriving the day before brimming with patriotic novelty items such as huge hats, as proudly worn by Cpl Ryan Sebo, nerf foot balls, and Frisbees; decorations were not hard to come by.

As the day progressed the Tp was tasked to fix a large hole in the road way where the water from a Wadi eroded the bridge and it collapsed. This made for a long day as the Tp was out until after dark. Fortunately Tpr PeeWee Tremblay was wearing a new cooling suit to keep him comfortable. As it became night and 1 Troop still had not returned the crew of 31B decided to cook a Canada day barbeque of hot dogs and burgers for their return, knowing that if they came back later then expected that a cold burger is still better than no burger at all.
