Officer Commanding B Squadron

On graduation from RMC in 1998, Major Mike Onieu was posted to Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) as a tank troop leader. In 1999 he deployed with the Leopard C1 troop to Kosovo with 1st Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry Battle Group on Op KINETIC Roto 0. On return he served as the Assistant Adjutant for a year before being promoted to Captain in 2001 and posted to the South Alberta Light Horse in Medicine Hat as an RSSO.

During his second Regimental tour Capt Onieu served as Battle Captain and then 2IC of A Sqn from 2003-2005. Posted in 2005 to the Canadian Manoeuver Training Center for his second ERE, he served one year as Plans Officer and two years as Adjutant. He was promoted to his present rank in 2008 while serving as Operations Officer of the 1st Battalion Royal Canadian Regiment Operational Mentoring Liaison Team on Task Force 3-08. Returning from Afghanistan in 2009, he served one year at LFWA HQ as G3 Operations. For his third Regimental tour, Maj Onieu took command of B Squadron in September 2010.

Maj Onieu enjoys hiking, playing drums, home renovations, autocross, and serving as staff to a Labrador Retriever and two Siamese cats. He is an avid Saskatchewan Roughriders fan.
