Born in St John’s, NL, Maj Leonard enrolled in the CAF in August 2003 after completing a Master of Arts degree at the University of Western Ontario in July 2002.  He completed the Army Operations Course in December 2009 and received the Project Management Professional designation in July 2015.

On completion of Armour Officer training in September 2005, Maj Leonard was posted to LdSH(RC) in Edmonton.  During the course of his Regimental employment, Maj Leonard has worked as a tank troop leader, Battle Captain in Reconnaissance Squadron, and the unit Operations Officer.  He has deployed on three expeditionary operations, including Op ATHENA Roto 3 as a tank troop leader, Op ATTENTION Roto 0, and Op PROTEUS Roto 14.  He was awarded a Comd CJOC Commendation for his work on Op ATTENTION Roto 0.  Maj Leonard also served as the IRU Vanguard unit Operations Officer during Op LENTUS 13-01 as part of the CAF response to the Government of Alberta’s request for assistance during the floods that affected the southern portion of that province.

Maj Leonard is in a common-law relationship with his partner Natalie and shares their home with two mixed-breed and ill-behaved dogs.  He spends a great deal of his free time hunting and fly-fishing during the appropriate seasons, and has been known chase deep snow in the mountains during the winter.
