Strathcona’s Association Annual Family Golf Tournament
At 0800 hrs on 6 August 2011, 48 golfers lead by the Ron White and Bob Evans foursome crossed the start line/line of departure for our Association’s annual family golf tournament.
The golfing was serious fun with good weather and a lot of good humoured heckling dished out by all. Following the golf, with surprisingly no injuries to person or property, more than 60 golfers and family members gathered at the local Legion for a chuckle, prize presentation, raffle, auction and of course refreshments and food
When all the erasers had stopped moving, the Regimental team of MCpl John Lamothe, MCpl Ryan Sebo, Cpl Jeff Thompson and Cpl John Johnson came up the winners with a 5 under par. A very close second place was secured by the Owen foursome with an impressive 4 under par. Hey, we had no idea the Regiment had an official golf team and would take this so seriously.
Other winners of the day were Ron White’s closest to the pin, Jennifer Francis (Wyatt team) with longest drive ladies, Cpl John Johnson with longest putt and Cody Hembree (team Wyatt #2) with longest drive men. During all presentations you could sense that there were sooo many “close but no cigar” attempts. Congratulations to all winners and players.
Following our tournament and on behalf of our Association we mailed off over a dozen letters of appreciation thanking corporate and private sponsors. We know that it is not the golf that they were supporting but the Regimental veterans, current serving soldiers and of course their families. These local sponsors are proof that we live in a very giving and appreciative society.
As usual our Regiment was behind us 100%. They donated a much sought after raffle gift, some individual prizes and most importantly we were again joined by a foursome of fit and spirited serving soldiers. The Commanding Officer had also planned on attending. Unfortunately last minute duties kept him in Edmonton. He has an open invitation in 2012.
We are confident that all who joined us for our day of fun and camaraderie had a hoot and look forward to our next tournament. On that note, I have asked Kathy Batty to join us next year. Unfortunately she does not golf. Kathy did say however that she “enjoys driving around in a cart with a beer”. I do believe we have a beverage cart volunteer for our 2012 outing?
Thank you to all players and thank you to those family members who joined us for making this another “great day to be in the Regiment”.
